Missa Gaia Concert Logo
The client wanted a logo and marketing material for their annual Earth Day concert, which featured elements of Paul Winters' Missa Gaia along with other compositions (including wolf cries and whale songs). They really wanted a logo that included an image of the Earth as well as a chalice.

Challenges: To successfully unite the form of a chalice and a globe and convey elements of the Missa Gaia concert.
I initially attempted to incorporate the Unitarian Universalist chalice into the design, which proved to be more of a challenge than I had anticipated. The stylized chalice is rather long and shallow and when paired with the shape of the globe started looking a lot like the Pepsi logo. (Which just goes to show that things don't always turn out as well on paper as in your head.) After a number of sketches, I instead began using images that played off of the chalice's design. The chalice then became a leaf or a whale's tale. I was playing with a ball during a brainstorming session and got the idea of a hand holding the globe, that idea took hold and grew into two hands cupped, mimicking a chalice. In the end, they liked this idea the best.
